Abstract

Paul on the Road to Natchez: Conversion and Resurrection in the Christ-Haunted South
By Mary Elizabeth Button
Paul on the Road to Natchez is a project that is comprised of both paintings and essays in
which the conversion of Paul is imagined at various sites along the Natchez Trace. In
each of the fifteen pieces in the series, well-know images of Saul's conversion (some
from art history, others from family Bibles) have been reproduced within an illustration
of sites along the Natchez Trace. Saul's journey to Damascus, and the blinding light of
the resurrected Christ that transforms Saul into Paul, provides the narrative structure for
the project.
