AN ASSESSMENT OF MALARIA AWARENESS IN UGANDA THROUGH THE EYES OF MALARIA CONTROL ADMINISTRATORS Público
Mugerwa-Kasujja, Agnes (2011)
Abstract
Uganda is one of the malaria-endemic countries. The research
done to date calls for more
research and prevention activities to reduce the number of deaths
due to malaria. Although much
is known about the morbidity and mortality associated with malaria
as a disease in Uganda, few
studies have investigated the awareness of the problem. Teaching
about malaria in schools and
encouraging students to participate in community malaria prevention
projects may be a key point
of intervention to curb this disease. Covering malaria topics like
transmission, treatment, and
prevention may be important to include in school curriculums. Of
course many children in the
rural areas do not get to go to school because of poverty. This is
where community projects can
be especially valuable.
There are already local programs and many of them partner with
international programs to
control malaria in Uganda. Using in-depth one-on-one key informant
interviews, a needs
assessment was conducted on current malaria awareness interventions
from the perspective of 30
members from 5 local programs which included the Malaria
Consortium, Malaria Control
Program, Ugandan Ministry of Health, Ugandan Malaria Surveillance
Project (UMSP), and the
Northern Uganda Malaria AIDS and Tuberculosis Program (NUMAT). This
study incorporated
both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Results
of the study will inform of
awareness interventions for students and young people. Findings
showed that malaria awareness
had not been vigorously pursued as a tool in fighting malaria in
the past. Because funds/
resources were a challenge for local programs, recommendations
include partnering with
international programs interested in promoting awareness. The
Malaria Foundation International
(MFI) based in the US is one such program because it has projects
like SLAM (Student leaders
against malaria). The MFI is an outreach program with global
initiatives that have been
implemented in some malaria-endemic countries in Africa and Asia to
aid malaria control
through their services.
