Abstract

This dissertation explores the restructuring of colonial hierarchies after independence through discourses of ethnicity and race at the turn of the twentieth century. Specifically, this research focuses on the role of Spanish cultural missions to Argentina attempting to reassert commercial influence over the former colony through cultural hegemony. The idea of a homogeneous ethnicity across the former Spanish empire became the foundation for the formation of networks and negotiations to stimulate the flow of capital, people, and goods between the two nations. Four travel narratives by the cultural brokers who led these missions provide the main sources for an analysis of the notion Raza hispana (or the Hispanic race): Federico Rahola's Sangre Nueva (1906), Viaje de S.A.R Infanta doña Isabel a Buenos Aires by Alfredo Escobar y Ramirez-Marqués de Valdeiglesias, Adolfo Posada's La república Argentina, and Argentina y sus grandezas by Blasco Ibáñez. Inspired by the racial ideas of the so-called "Generación del 98," these travellers lobbied the Spanish and Argentine governments to influence the production of policy that maintained the migration of workers from Spain to Argentina, stimulated the import of Spanish goods to the South American market, and kept the former colony "safe" from rising powers like the United States and the cultural influence of other European immigrants. In doing so, these intellectuals shaped national narratives in both countries as well as their postcolonial relation.
