Abstract

“Can Biblical Literacy and Academic Literacy Integration Increase the Understanding of the

Book of Genesis Using Language Reasoning Skills Applications and Scripture Diagramming?”

This research proposal examines how integrating biblical literacy with academic literacy, through applying language reasoning skills and diagramming scripture, can enhance adult congregants understanding of the Book of Genesis.

The study will take place in a virtual Zoom classroom setting, involving participants from El Bethel Baptist Church and surrounding communities across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maryland. It will focus on adult learners in the Visions program. This program aims to enhance comprehension of The Book of Genesis by utilizing critical reading, thinking strategies, and scriptural diagramming, thereby minimizing scriptural misinterpretations.

The methodology includes anonymous questionnaires, qualitative interviews, and recorded group conversations to assess participants’ strengths and challenges in understanding the book of Genesis. The curriculum features writing exercises, ethical discussions, interdisciplinary connections, guest speakers, and service-learning projects to create a comprehensive educational experience.

By creating an inclusive environment that encourages various perspectives, the program aims to harmonize faith with education, fostering spiritual growth and academic development. This strategy aligns with findings that indicate integrating religious practices with academic literacy and analyzing scriptures can improve comprehension and critical thinking skills.
