Abstract

Monster Theory: Reading Culture is a seminal text in the field of cultural studies. It provides a theoretical framework for the examination of monsters and the ways in which they reflect the fears of the societies in which they appear. This framework is useful in understanding the archetype of the monstrous hillbilly — a recurring figure in the work of Cormac McCarthy. By examining the instantiations of this figure in McCarthy’s novels Outer Dark, Child of God, and The Road, I explore the ways in which this figure comments on cultural fears of the past, present, and future.
