Abstract
Abstract Religiosidades en Tránsito: el simulacro aljamiado en el siglo XVI español By María del Mar Rosa-Rodríguez This dissertation examines Islam, Judaism, and Christianity as portrayed in Aljamiado Literature, Judeo-Spanish Literature, and a 1504 fatwa. These uncanny and hybrid texts exist on the borderline between the alphabet of one language and the sound of another (e.g. Spanish written with Arabic letters or Spanish written in Hebrew characters). This dissertation focuses exclusively on Aljamiado Literature and intends to map out the religiosities in transit of sixteenth- Century Spain through the hybridity of language in this literature. The first chapter deals with the linguistic diversity in Aljamiado writings, creating a theoretical framework of the Aljamiado simulacra. The second chapter discusses several Aljamiado legends and treatises that illustrate religious overlaps between Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The third chapter addresses the religious subjectivities of sixteenth-century Spain produced by the acts of simulation and dissimulation and the discussion of a 1504 fatwa from the Mufti of Oran. The dissertation includes several original transcriptions from Aljamiado to Spanish. These texts reveal covert and subversive gestures of religious and linguistic transit, contrary to the hegemonic definition of Imperial Spain. Based on six years of extensive archival research in Madrid, this dissertation incorporates these marginalized texts into the Spanish literary history and explains the religious passing that takes place when a subject lives between the simulation of Catholicism, and the dissimulation of Islam and Judaism.
