Abstract

How does cultural globalization affect individuals’ attitudes regarding state nationalism? There is a dearth of research on the effects of cultural globalization on nationalism at the individual level, despite the abundance of literature on the impact of economic globalization on nationalism. To fill this gap, this study utilized public opinion data on Asian citizens and employed fixed effects models. The findings suggest that individuals' perceptions of cultural globalization slightly, but significantly, enhance their nationalist sentiments. These findings are consistent with Social Identity Theory. The results have important implications for how cultural factors can help explain variations in people's state nationalist sentiments. They also suggest the need for the inclusion of cultural globalization in the development of an overall globalization index.
