Abstract
"One in the brain": a Philosophical Exploration of Miller's
Crossing
This thesis critically explores Miller's Crossing from a
thematic, rather than technical,
perspective. With an eye towards understanding the film's broad
philosophical meaning, this
paper considers the action of the film to be an allegory of the
human condition. Using this
interpretive framework, this thesis explores the urban, political,
and social dimensions of the
setting, and thoroughly examines the film's major characters. The
character analysis purports to
give insight into the characters' "ways of being in the world"-that
is, what they value and what
drives them to act. It concludes with a meditation on the presence
(or lack thereof) of moral
virtue among the various characters, reflecting on how their
respective moral sensibilities relate
to their fates.
