The Relationship between Relative-Provided Child Care and Obesity in 5th graders in the United States

This study explores the relationship between relative provided childcare and childhood obesity in
round 6 (fifth grade) children of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study- Kindergarten Cohort
1999 (N=9324). Survey adjusted logit models were used to assess the association between
obesity, as defined by the International Obesity Task Force cut-off points, and receipt of regular
relative care, the type of relative care provider, and type of non-parental care. First the bivariate
association was analyzed for each main exposure and then controlled for with child socio-
demographic characteristics, family socio-economic status (SES) variables, and household
structure variables. In the bivariate analysis, only receipt of regular relative care had an
association with obesity in the bivariate analysis. No association was found between relative care,
type of relative care provider and type of non-parental and childhood obesity once controlling
variables were added to the models. However, several socio-demographic, family SES and
household characteristics were found to be significantly associated with obesity in all of the
models, a finding consistent with prior research. In addition, many of these characteristics were
also significantly associated with children receiving relative provided child care. These results
provide insight that relative care may not be an independent risk factor for early childhood
obesity, but may be a characteristic of children who are already at risk for childhood obesity.
