United Nations Humanitarian Response to the Rohingya Crisis Between 2001 – 2018 Öffentlichkeit

Abstract

The Rohingya are a population originating from Myanmar (also known as Burma until 1989). Currently, Rohingya are considered stateless. Born without citizenship, Rohingya are displaced and live in small areas sanctioned by the government of Myanmar. Outside of Myanmar, the largest population of Rohingya live in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, Rohingya reside in refugee camps and will live there for the foreseeable future. The crisis Rohingya face is the largest and most acute contemporary humanitarian emergency. Because of the critical humanitarian status of the Rohingya, the United Nations spearheaded a response to alleviate the situation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the differences between United Nations humanitarian assistance received by Rohingya populations who are displaced but remain within Myanmar and those who reside in refugee camps in Bangladesh between the years of 2001 and 2018. Research discovered that between 2001 and 2018, more money was spent on aid for displaced Rohingya in Myanmar than aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. However, in the past two years more money was spent on aid for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh than aid for displaced Rohingya living in Myanmar. Over time, increasing numbers of Rohingya flee Myanmar; humanitarian aid and funds needed to assist these populations surge in response. Review of this information is necessary to focus the humanitarian community’s response to the Rohingya crisis and use lessons learned to prevent future humanitarian crises.
