Abstract
Personality Subtypes of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
By Eric Russ, M.A.
The majority of research on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
treats the disorder as
a unitary construct. However, researchers have recently begun
identifying subtypes of PTSD
using self-report personality inventories. This approach has
identified three subtypes:
Externalizing, Internalizing, and Resilient. This paper expands on
previous research by subtyping
PTSD using the SWAP-II, a personality Q-sort for expert rather than
lay informants. Study 1
identifies and provides preliminary validity data for 5 subtypes of
PTSD in a national sample of
adults in treatment: Externalizing Dysregulated, Internalizing,
Resilient, Dependent, and
Obsessional. Study 2 extends the validation of these subtypes to a
highly traumatized inner-city
non-psychiatric population. Study 3 identifies PTSD subtypes in a
national sample of adolescents
in treatment. Implications for future research are
discussed.
