Abstract
Abstract
Prosecuting War Criminals in Bosnia and Herzegovina
This study empirically evaluates the relationship between
post-conflict justice and
reconciliation by assessing the impact of war crimes trials on
processes of local reconciliation
across sub-national units in post-conflict Bosnia. The study finds
that post-conflict justice
positively impacts reconciliation in municipalities that
experienced the most severe violence of
the war, while providing no significant impact in municipalities
that experienced less violence
and potentially an adverse impact in municipalities that
experienced the absolute least amount of
wartime violence. These results suggest the need for a more complex
theory of the relationship
between reconciliation and post-conflict justice.
