Friction by Design: Restoring Agency in the Attention Economy Restricted; Files & ToC

Abstract

This thesis examines the design mechanisms that drive compulsive digital media use,

challenging the pathologizing narrative of phone addiction by using normative dissociation—a

psychological state of passive, unintentional engagement— as a more nuanced framework for

understanding the consequences of exploitative interface design. Grounded in behavioral

psychology, habit formation theory, and Self-Determination Theory, this model situates

compulsive engagement within the broader context of the attention economy, in which user

attention is systematically captured and monetized, and offers a lens for analyzing how

manipulative UX patterns, frictionless design, and algorithmic reinforcement can compromise

user autonomy and wellbeing. In response, this project explores how reflective and behavioral

design interventions, ranging from self-monitoring tools to strategic interface disruptions, can

interrupt the dissociative state to foster more intentional interactions. A prototype application is

presented as a case study to demonstrate how these interventions might be implemented in

practice. This work advocates for a reimagining of the role of technology in our lives— one that

prioritizes holistic psychosocial health, supports self-regulation, and fosters meaningful

engagement. By reclaiming user attention as a site for consumer agency, this thesis envisions a

digital ecosystem designed to reconcile the priorities of interface design with the cognitive,

emotional, and behavioral dimensions of the lived user experience.
