Abstract

This work seeks to explore the ramifications of displacement on two radical characters who have been physically, emotionally, and socially displaced from their community. Building on research into Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese cultures, this work focuses specifically on the questions of worldview and identity, as well as the divide between the knowledge and the experience of those who have been differently displaced. In addition, this work utilizes the form of the wuxia genre to further explore the theme of displacement, particularly in the questioning of what happens when two non-traditional, radical characters are introduced to the form of this genre. When characters that do not traditionally exist in the wuxia genre are introduced, they become displaced and plagued with the struggles of wuxia characters – the desire for honor and justice – in wholly different ways. By understanding the different ways an individual can be displaced – through education, trauma, forced removal, and societal isolation – we can understand displacement as both generational, continuous, and possessing both positive and negative aftereffects.
