Exploration of Eucharist in Hawai’i: A Model for Intercultural Community Fellowship Open Access
Finau, John (Spring 2026)
Abstract
This paper explores the practice of Eucharist in Hawai‘i as a dynamic model for intercultural community fellowship, grounded in the lived experiences of Pacific Islander traditions and the diverse realities of local churches. Within Pacific Islander culture, gathering around the table is a sacred act of hospitality, relationship-building, and celebration (fiafia). This cultural practice parallels the Christian understanding of Eucharist as a communal, spiritual meal centered on thanksgiving, grace, and the presence of Christ.
Focusing on Parker United Methodist Church (PUMC), a highly diverse congregation located in Kāne’ohe, Hawaii, the study examines how Eucharistic worship can foster unity across cultures through intentional inclusion, dialogue, and shared leadership. Drawing on the United Methodist “Basic Pattern of Worship” titles: Entrance, Proclamation and Response, Thanksgiving and Communion, and Sending Forth, this project uses ecclesial imagination to reinterpret these liturgical movements using Hawaiian cultural terminology: E Komo Mai, Walaʻau, Hōʻihi, and Aloha ʻOe. These adaptations reflect indigenous values, communal storytelling, reverence, and relational sending.
The paper introduces “Community FiaFia,” an intercultural Eucharistic model developed at PUMC that integrates worship, cultural expression, and shared meals as a means of building authentic relationships. Through a detailed account of its design, implementation, and evaluation, the study demonstrates how this model empowers laity, encourages community partnerships, and creates inclusive spaces for diverse cultural participation.
Ultimately, this project offers a practical and adaptable framework for intercultural churches seeking to deepen fellowship, celebrate diversity, and embody God’s reconciling love through the shared table.
