Physician's Power to Protect: A Grant Proposal for a Health Education Program Evaluation Open Access

Abstract
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. A review of the literature reveals that there is limited training for medical professionals on the topic of child sexual abuse in the U.S. and in Canadian graduate medical education models, including the post M.D. educational environment. This thesis develops a public health grant proposal to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, methods and teaching resources of the Physician's Power to Protect health education program. This program was designed for medical professionals to address a gap in specialized and standardized training pertaining to the prevention and detection of child sexual abuse. Physician's Power to Protect was created in conjunction with Emory University Rollins School of Public Health and VOICE Today, Inc. in response to the findings of a needs assessment that explored child sexual abuse as a public health and safety issue to gain understanding whether there is a need to intervene at the primary medical practice level. The Physician's Power to Protect grant proposal is for the evaluation of this curriculum that was recently implemented and taught at the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia Regents University) for medical students as they are preparing for their first year of residency. The question that this proposal explores is whether child sexual abuse training should be incorporated in graduate medical education as well as pediatric wellness check-ups and anticipatory guidelines. Ultimately, the goal is for the Physician's Power to Protect curriculum to be adopted by medical schools throughout Georgia and across the U.S. and Canada.
