Drive Fast, Worship Language Restricted; Files Only
Hickey, Averett (Spring 2025)
Abstract
The poems in Drive Fast, Worship Language are energetic in their movement, complex in their construction, and obsessive in their examination of many different subjects. This collection follows the poet’s mind as it traverses a vast landscape of lived experiences, ranging from graffiti and reckless driving to family relationships and encounters with the natural world. The formal terrain of the project is equally expansive, encompassing received forms such as the American sonnet, golden shovel, burning haibun and others. Drive Fast, Worship Language also deploys new forms devised by the poet to address the unique demands of individual poems, allowing for constant innovation and evolution throughout the collection. Themes of recklessness and its consequences, substance abuse, mental health struggles, and inheritance pervade the work. Drive Fast, Worship Language explores how a collection of poems can reimagine one’s lived experiences, while at the same time serving as a nexus of reflection upon the personal histories that inform the work.
