The Unsung Sunday Heroes: Supply Pastors and Their Ministry in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Open Access

Abstract

Mainline Protestant denominations are experiencing clergy shortages, leaving congregations without a pastor. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has seen a steady decline in ministers of Word and Sacrament (ordained clergy) and ministers of Word and Service (ordained deacons). The steady decline causes congregations to struggle to supply pulpits on Sunday mornings. In response to these shortages, synodical bishops are increasing certification and licensing of lay leaders to serve as Synodical-authorized Ministers (SAMs). Seventy-five ministers were surveyed from across the ELCA. These Unsung Heroes hold ELCA congregations together. They preach, preside over the Sacraments (Baptisms and Communion), and teach Bible and Confirmation classes.
