Strengthening Yoked Parish Relationships through the Preaching of Hesed(חסד) and Hope in the Book of Ruth Open Access

Abstract
The project examines the yoked parish partnership between Faith United Methodist Church in Waseca, Minnesota, and Korean United Methodist Church in Mankato, focusing on how the two congregations have sought to overcome practical challenges and difficulties through collaborative ministry. In particular, the project explores the impact of a three-week sermon series based on the Book of Ruth on mutual understanding, cooperation, and shared hope between the two churches.
Using the theological concepts of hesed (חסד)—God’s steadfast love, covenantal faithfulness, and merciful kindness—and hope as presented in the Book of Ruth, this project employs a practical theological framework to strengthen the collaborative relationship between congregations from different generations, cultures, languages, and ethnic backgrounds. The study aims to demonstrate how two distinct congregations can become one in Christ without losing their diversity, offering hope that they can navigate difficult realities together.
Data were collected through surveys and interviews conducted after the sermon series to assess changes in congregants’ perceptions of cooperation, mutual understanding, and hope. The findings provide insight into how theological reflection on the Book of Ruth can be effectively applied in pastoral ministry, particularly in showing how the shared experience of overcoming challenges can foster renewed hope and present new opportunities for growth in both congregations.
This project provides that covenantal faithfulness and loving kindness can serve as a model for churches seeking unity across racial, cultural, and generational boundaries. It offers another approach for congregations participating in yoked parish partnerships, demonstrating how churches can remain united in hesed amid crisis and difference, and thereby participate in God’s work of restoration and healing.
