Abstract

Growing rates of mental illness among the pediatric population have led to increased morbidity and mortality, with suicide being the second leading cause of death among children aged 10-14. The shortage of pediatric mental health (MH) providers in the United States persists. Barriers to MH care, including limited access to resources and stigma, perpetuate the crisis. Therefore, pediatric primary care providers must seize every opportunity to bridge this gap.

The project aims to create an age-appropriate virtual educational program to educate adolescents aged 12-18 on MH assessment tools like the PHQ-9, commonly used during well-child visits. The Pender's Health Promotion Model will guide the project. By utilizing evidence-based practices and engaging key stakeholders, the program bridges MH gaps by educating and empowering adolescents to understand their mental well-being and proactively engage in their care.
