Abstract
This thesis is a study of race thinking in the Indian subcontinent. For the study the thesis analyzes the workings of a fledgling hindu nationalist organization in the early twentieth century. This thesis is interested in framing the context of race thinking as it emerges within the workings of Hindu Mahasabha within a larger history of British colonialism, comparative philology, and idioms of traditional xenology in the subcontinent. The thesis asserts that the cultural idiom of ‘mleccha’ as found within early Sanskrit and Pali texts of the subcontinent alongside ‘upper - caste racism’ as articulated in Gyanendra Pandey’s work form suitable lenses through which to view the race thinking on the Indian subcontinent.
